This 7-Day Rwanda Gorillas and Wildlife takes you to Rwanda. Rwanda is a country gifted by nature, commonly referred to as the land of “a thousand hills” because of its natural beauty. Rwanda is also a home to the rare Mountain Gorillas and in this Itinerary, we will take you for a Gorilla tracking experience, Game drives in the parks as well as participate in cultural and community tours where you will learn the different cultures and historical ways of life of the people of Rwanda

Akagera National Park

A diverse and picturesque protected area situated in the eastern part of Rwanda. Named after the Akagera River that flows through the park, it offers a unique safari experience with its mix of savannas, wetlands, lakes, and woodlands. Here’s an overview of Akagera National Park:

Wildlife and Biodiversity: Akagera National Park boasts a rich variety of wildlife, making it an excellent destination for both wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Some of the key species you can encounter include:

  • Mammals: The park is home to a range of mammals, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and more. The diverse ecosystems in the park support a wide array of species.
  • Birds: Akagera is a paradise for bird watchers, with over 500 bird species, including numerous water birds, raptors, and endemic species. The lakes and wetlands are especially productive for birdwatching.
  • Aquatic Life: The lakes within the park, such as Lake Ihema, are inhabited by hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of fish species.

Volcanoes National Park:

A remarkable protected area located in the Virunga Mountains of northern Rwanda. This park is renowned for being one of the last refuges of the critically endangered mountain gorillas, which are the park’s most iconic inhabitants. Here’s what you should know about Volcanoes National Park:

Mountain Gorilla Conservation: Volcanoes National Park is best known for its efforts in protecting and conserving the mountain gorilla population. This park was instrumental in the work of primatologist Dian Fossey, who dedicated her life to studying and protecting these gorillas. Today, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is a major draw for tourists interested in ecotourism and wildlife conservation.

Drive to Lake Kivu

A scenic journey that allows you to experience the natural beauty of Rwanda. Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes and is located along the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The drive offers stunning views of the lake, the surrounding hills, and the picturesque landscapes.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Rwanda

On arrival to Kigali you will meet our tour representative who will thereafter transfer you to a hotel for an overnight stay on Bed and Breakfast. You will be briefed by your safari guide about your tour. You may also take a stroll in the streets of Kigali.

Day 2: City tour of Kigali, drive to Akagera National Park

This morning in Kigali, you will have a guided city tour to explore the landmarks of history of this budding capital. You will visit the Rwanda Genocide memorial museum in Gisozi. You will also visit local fresh produce markets and local crafts to purchase souvenirs. Afterwards, you will be transferred to Akagera National Park for wildlife viewing. Upon arrival and clearance, you shall enter the park and drive to your accommodation.

Day 3: Game viewing in Akagera National Park and boat ride on Lake Ihema

Early in the morning you will embark on a game drive in Akagera National park. Sightings of buffalo, elephant, antelope, zebra, giraffe, baboons, monkeys, an incredible 490 bird species are possible. You will be led by a ranger guide to better chances of encountering many animals in the park. You may also spot members of the lion pride in Akagera. A boat trip on Lake Ihema is also a highlight of any visit to Akagera, with its large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles and abundant waterbirds on the island in the middle of the lake.

Day 4: Drive to Volcanoes National park via Kigali

After breakfast, you shall begin your journey to Volcanoes national park via Kigali city. Enjoy the spectacular views of hills and misty valleys on your way. Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range – home of the endangered mountain gorilla. You will check into your accommodation, have dinner and relax in preparation for activities of the next day.

Day 5: Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park

Early in the morning you will be transferred to the park headquarters for clearance, briefing and allocation. After briefing, you will be led by experienced ranger guides on the hike to visit one of the 12 habituated mountain Gorilla families in the park. You will spend an hour in their presence when you can observe, photograph and film them in their idyllic habitat. After tracking you shall return to your accommodation and relax for the rest of the evening.

Day 6: Drive to Lake Kivu, boat ride and relaxing

After breakfast, you will drive to Lake Kivu where you will take a boat ride. Afterwards, you will relax at your accommodation for the rest of the day. You may also opt to do some optional activities like kayaking, biking and tour of the fishing villages.

Day 7: Optional activities, return to Kigali and departure

After an early morning breakfast, you will be transferred to Kigali for your International flight. You will have stopovers along the way for photography. After wards transfer to the airport to catch up with your international flight to your next destination.
